An Introduction To Air Conditioning Problems
Many people make the mistake of not appreciating the significance of the role of the air conditioning system within your car’s interior make-up. It does far more than just keeping the inside of your car cool during warm weather. A fully working and efficient air conditioning system filters out all the harmful pollutants in the air. It improves the air quality by removing pollutants, airborne bacteria and pollen amongst others.
Far too often, car owners neglect the importance of air-con maintenance. Over time, the refrigerant gas in your car’s air conditioning system diminishes. This escalates quickly when the system isn’t used regularly. Most reputable car manufacturerrs recommend carrying out an air conditioning service every two years. This is to give the system the best opportunity to keep the air conditioning working at optimum level.
- Two-thirds of vehicles are fitted with car air conditioning systems these days
- Properly operational AC maintains more of the value of a car to be sold for a higher price
- Car air conditioning systems require servicing every 2 years (industry recommended)
- It is estimated that 10% of air con gas escapes the system every year

Tips On Keeping An Eye On Your Air Conditioning At Home
While the car is running, turn the air conditioning on (The air conditioner won’t run properly if your engine is off). Fresh air (not recirculated) tends to be the biggest indicator and the best setting for a proper diagnosis. You need the air blowing out of the center vents in the dash and the AC turned on. If your car has a ‘Max AC’ setting, select that option, if not then begin with the fan speed turned to its highest setting then do the following;
- Inspect the air pressure. Turn the air pressure to the high and low settings and see if the airflow changes like it normally does.
- You may also need to change your cabin air filter. Smell the air coming from the vents. If there are unusual smells, you could have a leak.
- Listen for unusual noises coming from the AC system. Noise could indicate that there is a problem with your compressor and that it needs repair or replacing.
- Feel the air coming out of the vents. You will need to know if the air is cold, room temperature, or hotter than the air around it.
A blown fuse can cause your AC to stop working. Inspect your car’s fuses. Check your owner’s manual for the location of your car’s fuse panel, as it may be under the bonnet, in the boot, or even in the driver’s footwell area.
